South Park used to be a lot more relevant to me as a shocking social commentary, but over the years I thought it became a little too much of shock for shock's sake. And it's too bad, because in my opinion the world will always need jesters to poke humor at our failings; sometimes the shock value is necessary, but other times it just alienates the audience and the message doesn't get through. Consider the function of the jester in King Lear. He was able to use humor to tell Lear all of the things that his vassals could not. Tonight I had brief encounter that made me very happy. A very old man walked out of Ben and Irv's around the same time as my wife and I did, and I noticed that he was wearing a cap that displayed his status as a WW2 veteran. I wanted to thank him for more than just holding the door; what I wanted most was to thank him for his service. Veterans and enlisted people of all generations deserve our gratitude, but I always keep a special place in my heart for those who served in WW2. They are becoming fewer by the day; and as far as I am concerned, WW2 was the last war where "freedom" truly was on the line for millions of people...where the fate
